Biology and ESS students attended Amersham Field Centre on Tuesday 3 June to cover the practical aspects of their courses. The students used quadrats to sample the effect of management techniques on woodland species, and enjoyed sampling the edible plant Wood Sorrel. This was, of course, under the watchful eye of James our course tutor. Assembling the point-frame quadrats always leads to healthy competition between the groups to see who can be first to work out the structure. However, the highlight was the capture-mark-release of the woodlice to estimate their population size. We wondered whether any of our marked woodlice will be found when the next group of students visit later in the month?
