Biathle World Championships

on

Last week, Carys in Lower VI competed in the Biathle World Championships in Bali as part of the Great Britain team – one of 42 nations represented. The event was held in tough conditions with racing taking place in 70% humidity and 32 degree heat – so it pushed competitors to their limit.

The Biathle mixed relay kicked off the competition where Carys and her partner were facing the much fancied South African pair.  After a very close first leg between Carys and the reigning SA champ, her partner pulled away to secure team GB’s first and only gold of the day.

Carys then had a couple of days off to support her friends and teammates before the final of the individual Biathle on Sunday. After the mixed relay she knew it was going to be a close race with the South African competitors, and it certainly was. It turned out to be the closest race of the week with a photo finish required to separate them after 11 minutes of racing.

After a lengthy delay following both girls breaking the tape at exactly the same, and despite giving everything and collapsing over the line, the verdict went against Carys on this occasion. But it wasn’t all bad news, as with GB teammates in third and fifth the team won gold. It was an amazing experience making new friends around the world, and the medals were a bonus.

Congratulations Carys – an incredible achievement.
