Last week, was Maths week; a week-long celebration aimed at making Mathematics accessible and enjoyable for
students of all backgrounds.
This annual event promotes a positive and inclusive approach to Maths, encouraging students to explore the subject beyond classroom. The Maths department offered a range of engaging resources, such as daily puzzles and problem-solving activities, as well as the always popular ‘Café Maths’.
The was also an online masterclass led by GCHQ; the UK’s intelligence, security and cyber agency, that explored what roles
Mathematicians have in the GCHQ, and what sort of Maths they use. Handy that we also have a team competing in
the cipher challenge of which they are a sponsor.
Here are some excerpts from the Café Maths presentations, which included three talks about golf, an exploration into
cutting a cucumber and also the dimensions included in the Vitruvian man.
On Wednesday of this week, 8 students who performed exceptionally well in the recent Senior Maths Challenge and achieved Gold certificates, sat the Senior Maths Kangaroo paper. Along with the Yohaku puzzle from Maths week, have a go at this one from last year’s Senior Kangaroo.
