The Philosophy and Theology department hosted an talk entitled Candomblé: A Religion of Resistance delivered by Abbey alumna Mariana Dantas. In her excellent talk, Mariana explained that Candomblé is mix of African (Yoruba) religion, Catholicism and Indigenous Brazilian beliefs. She explained how Candomblé developed in Brazil as a result of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and also described how contemporary Candomblé practitioners face religious discrimination and racism in Brazil. Despite these challenges, Candomblé remains a unique Brazilian religion that contributes to Brazilian culture. Students and staff alike attended the talk and asked thoughtful questions.
