African Drumming Workshop

on

Last Friday Lower I and Upper I had the opportunity to take part in an African Drumming workshop. In the workshop, each group learned a traditional West African piece of music using djembe drums. The piece was learned aurally, as practised in West Africa, and pupils had the opportunity to improvise solos, respond to aural cues, dance and develop their ensemble playing. Pupils were interested to learn about how drums could be engraved with symbols that had special meaning to the owner of the drum.
