A New Chapter

on

My first week at The Abbey couldn’t have been more wonderful. I have been truly overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome and the clear sense of ambition that runs through the Junior School. It is already a place of excellence, recognised and celebrated in many ways, and I feel privileged to be joining such a thriving and inspiring community.

Starting in April has given me the unique opportunity to spend this term truly getting to know the school – how it feels to work here, to learn here, and, in my case, to live here. This breathing space is a gift, allowing me to listen, observe, and engage deeply. I have approached this first week with curiosity—eager to understand the rhythms, relationships, and routines that make The Abbey such a special place. It’s through this curiosity that we can begin to imagine what’s possible as we look ahead together.

During my first week, my priority was to be present and visible – to meet every member of staff and take time to walk the school thoughtfully, considering what makes a great school and how we can build on our many strengths. During the staff learning walks that have filled my diary, every conversation has been rich with passion and professionalism, and every classroom has offered insight and direction. This opportunity to reflect and take stock, together as a staff team, is the essential first step in our shared journey of continuous improvement. We are already beginning to ask exciting questions about what comes next and how we can build on the strong foundations already in place.

In the weeks ahead, our Junior School team will be embarking on a research-based project aimed at evolving and enhancing our curriculum. This initiative will refine what we already do so well, placing us firmly at the forefront of educational innovation and development. It will also help to strengthen our ties with the Senior School, creating an even more seamless and enriching experience for every Abbey girl.

One of the things I am most looking forward to is welcoming each girl to my office for a special ‘headteacher’ breakfast in my study. These will be invaluable opportunities to hear directly from our pupils—to learn about how they experience school, what excites them, and what ideas they have for making our community even better.

There is a genuine buzz throughout the Junior School—an atmosphere of joy, curiosity, and collaboration. It is felt in every classroom, every corridor, and every smile. I couldn’t be more excited about the journey ahead.
