A Message from the Deputy Head Girls: Celebrating Our School Highlights

on

As we approach the end of our time at The Abbey, the Deputy Head Girls wanted to share some of their thoughts and personal experiences of what life at our incredible school has looked like!

Matilda:
I joined The Abbey part way through year 4, but I quickly found myself welcomed into the community, and settled in fast. Fast forward almost 10 years, and I find myself approaching the end of my time here – the perfect opportunity to reflect on all The Abbey has given me, and the many things I’ve learnt. Of course, learning is a central part of my life at The Abbey, but the community here is what makes our school so special, and why I was so keen to put myself forward for the position of Deputy Head Girl. I remember the mix of slight apprehension and admiration I felt towards the Sixth Formers when I joined the Senior school in year 7, and now being in a position where I can work with the younger years feels very full circle! Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to deliver assemblies on a wide range of topics, as well as opportunities to explore partnerships with other schools.

The Abbey community is what makes our school so special, and I’ve definitely made some friends for life here – a particular highlight has always been the trips the school has offered. This year, visiting Bristol University was such a fun way to explore the city and discover what university has to offer us, however the 2 weeks I spent trekking in Slovenia a few years ago was definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my time at The Abbey. Although the school offers numerous trips, my favourite part about life here is definitely the range of activities and opportunities on offer during day-to-day life. I love being involved in clubs and societies (as a book lover, the student-run Literature Society is always a weekly highlight), and as a Sports Scholar, throwing myself into the many sports on offer, I’ll never forget swimming at the Olympic pool in London 3 years in a row, and the pride I felt representing The Abbey at a national level.

As we look towards the future, and the exciting new chapter that awaits us, I know I’ll look back on my time here with a huge amount of appreciation and admiration for both students and teachers who so wonderfully fill our school with joy, and have instilled in me a powerful sense of confidence and purpose.

Harriet:
I have truly loved my time at The Abbey but I can still remember how scared I was on my first day. I came from a little village school and no one else came with me to The Abbey and on my first day I was beyond scared about starting at this big school out in town. Everyone was so kind when we all arrived as little year 7s. I remember all of the bonding events we did in the first few terms and all the friends I made with whom I am still incredibly close today, in the Sixth Form. As well as The Abbey nourishing the formation of our friendships, we have done countless trips and events since year 7 to keep building those friendships. One of my favourite trips was the PGL football trip Miss Venning took us on in year 8 where we all had a go on the giant swing. Another one of my favourite trips later in my time at The Abbey was the year 12 trip to Bristol where we explored the university and got a taste of student life.

Dorcas:
I feel really happy to be part of the Abbey community. I still remembered how I felt really nervous when I joined in year 12. I moved from Hong Kong and had worries about getting used to such a different learning environment. However, the friends I met here were so welcoming and I felt really comfortable. My favourite part of Sixth Form is our Lower Sixth Bristol Trip. It was a nice opportunity for our whole year group to get closer to each other and bond with each other. Events like diversity day also showed the Abbey’s importance on inclusion. We had lots of opportunities to celebrate the different cultures we have as a school!

As our time as Deputy Head Girls comes to an end, we look towards a new and exciting chapter in our lives, while reflecting on all of our memories here. We are so grateful for all of the wonderful experiences that have shaped our time at The Abbey and the community and friendships we take with us.
